About Dr. Kumar
Anant Kumar, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with a rare breadth of fellowship training in spine surgery, spinal deformity, pediatric spine and trauma. He cares for patients with both straightforward and complex spine problems, often using minimally invasive approaches. Dr. Kumar treats a full range of cervical, thoracic, and lumbar conditions, from herniated discs and spinal stenosis to scoliosis and kyphosis using minimally invasive techniques when appropriate.
Dr. Kumar earned his medical degree from Kurnool Medical College in Kurnool, India. He completed orthopedic surgery residency training at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh, India, and at the Campbell Clinic, University of Tennessee program in Memphis, TN. He then completed four additional fellowships, an uncommon level of advanced training, in orthopedics in Interlaken, Switzerland; pediatric orthopedics at Shriners Hospitals for Children in Springfield, MA; spine surgery and deformity at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX; and orthopedic trauma surgery at the Campbell Clinic, University of Tennessee in Memphis, TN. He also served as an assistant professor in the department of orthopedics at the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.
Patients value Dr. Kumar’s depth of training and thoughtful approach to both common concerns and complex problems. He emphasizes a multidisciplinary approach, focusing on non-operative, conservative options and minimally invasive techniques whenever appropriate, and considering surgery only when other treatments have not provided adequate relief.
In addition to clinical care, Dr. Kumar is active in professional organizations, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Scoliosis Research Society, and the North American Spine Society. For more than three decades, he has provided orthopedic and spine surgical care through nonprofit organizations in developing countries, including work in Peru; across Africa in Tanzania, Kenya, and Malawi; and in Asia in Laos and Vietnam. He also serves patients in his home country of India and continues to volunteer on medical mission trips for at least two weeks each year.
My Approach to Treating Patients
I focus on individualized care built around your goals and a clear understanding of your diagnosis. Whenever possible, I start with conservative treatments and recommend surgery only when it offers the best path to lasting relief and function.
